Half Yours, who completed the Caulfield Cup-Melbourne Cup double in 2025, is now set to have a huge weight on his back in this year’s edition of the race that stops a nation.

The son of St Jean will carry the top weight of 59kg in the prestigious handicap, and that is something which co-trainer Calvin McEvoy is disappointed in.

“It's really unfortunate,” started Tony McEvoy’s co-trainer on SENTrack & RSN’s Giddy Up.

“These are the rules that have been put in place for the jockeys, haven't they? Like the weights have gone up, the minimum's gone up, which has meant the max has gone up.

“There obviously isn't much around from overseas. Al Riffa didn't nominate, Sir Delius didn't nominate.

“I ran into David Hegan (Racing Victoria’s Head of Handicapping) and started hurdling a little bit of abuse at him. No, to be honest, he explained it well, but it is disappointing because we want the winner from the previous year to be competitive the next year, don't we?

“And I saw a video with all the horses in the last 30 years that have ran the next year with big weights, and I mean other than Makybe Diva, it's pretty (poor).

“But look, he's a two miler, so as long as his form's good and he's healthy, happy and sound, we're going to have to take our place.”

Regarding the six-year-old’s next start, McEvoy revealed that they will run him in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes on October 3.

Sir Delius is the current favourite for that race, but the co-trainer is confident Half Yours will knock off the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained stallion.

“We're going to go to the Turnbull,” stated McEvoy.

“I think his run was very underrated (in the Makybe Diva Stakes). I think everyone is talking about how good Sir Delius went, he went great, but I think our horse went as good.

“I do (believe we can beat Sir Delius).

“2000m at Flemington, it's going to be moving day for our horse, and we'll decide what we do after that.”

Half Yours is currently the $11 equal favourite with Sportsbet to win the Melbourne Cup, while he also sits at $11 to claim triumph in the Turnbull.
