See their best bets below:
Jayne Ivil
Ellerslie
Race 1 3YO 1200m
5 – 1 – 8 – 3
Magnate represents some value in an even three-year-old line-up with two impressive trial wins leading into his debut. His draw does pose some concerns with a quick run into the first bend; he will either need to work to secure a handy position or take his medicine and travel at the back of the field and hope for luck. Trainer Andrew Campbell doesn’t mind travelling his horses but wouldn’t be taking the gelding to the other end of the island if he didn’t think it was worth it. Spellbound has also trialled well, and has race day experience on his side, the blinkers come off for his fresh up run.
Race 2 Rating 65 2400m
5 – 7 – 1 – 2
Paper Romance picked up his maiden win by a big margin last start, he was strong to the line posting the fastest last 200m sectional, suggesting he is suited to the rise in distance. He is drawn out in a small field but is the only natural leader in this and shouldn’t have to work too hard to get to the front. Since stepping up past 2000m he has been very consistent and that should continue here.
Trentham
Race 2 3YO 1000m
1 – 6 – 2 – 3
Ronaldo made a big impression in three runs as a two-year-old, winning his first two before finishing 5th at Group 1 level. Both wins have proved to be smart form guides with a subsequent stakes winner and stakes placegetter finishing behind him. He was a big, raw two-year-old who always looked like he was going to improve with time. His trial suggests he has returned in good order, and he will wear blinkers for the first time. Vahvay is still a maiden but was stakes placed behind Lara Antipova in her second race day start. The 1000m trip is short off her best put she has trialled smartly and with the blinkers on she could run a bold race fresh.
