Ciaron Maher Racing CEO Sam Cavanough and Adam Holland are behind a new ownership model designed to make racehorse ownership more accessible to racing fans.

The pair have joined forces through Unbridled Racing, offering micro shares in Ciaron Maher-trained horses through a simple, one-off payment.

Sam Cavanough has been at the helm of Ciaron Maher Racing, while Adam Holland, originally from Manchester, England, came into racing after being a keen punter before completing the National Stud Course at Newmarket, the BHA Development Programme and the Godolphin Flying Start.

The concept was born from a desire to give fans who may not otherwise be able to afford traditional racehorse ownership the chance to get involved.

“Unbridled wasn’t my idea but I remember having a chat with Sam when I was at Magic Millions about making racing more accessible for people like myself who probably weren’t going to be able to get into ownership,” Holland said.

“It’s such a great opportunity for racing fans and I wish something like this was going when I was at Uni”.

Unbridled currently has two horses on its books, with Over The Bridge bursting onto the scene with an impressive victory at Bendigo on debut before being set for a Group 3 assignment at Caulfield this Sunday.

Amazing Journey is also being targeted towards the Golden Eagle, giving Unbridled shareholders the chance to have a stake in two promising horses.

Fans can get involved with Over The Bridge for $155, while a share in Amazing Journey costs $349.

Cavanough said the response had been encouraging, with some of the industry’s biggest owners also getting involved.

“It’s a funny thing, we obviously want Unbridled to get into the best horses possible. You’d be shocked to see some of the names that buy these shares, they’re some of the bigger owners in the industry, so yeah, good to see our work paying off,” Cavanough said.

“Obviously with the economic conditions and the cost of living, it’s good to see people can still get involved,” Cavanough said.

“Hopefully people can start off with Unbridled and then maybe transfer into more ownership opportunities with Ciaron Maher Racing.”

The model could also have wider implications for the industry, with Cavanough believing similar technology could eventually be adopted by stables across the country.

“I do think there will be a situation in the future where a micro-share software system is created for all stables to make ownership more accessible,” Cavanough said.

For now, Holland says Unbridled will continue to focus on horses that have already shown they can perform on the track.

“For the time being, we will stick with tried horses, people want to know what they’re getting in and love a furnished product,” Holland said.

“There’s not going to be many opportunities where people have the chance to own a horse who is targeting a group 1, so tried horses is the aim for the time being”.

With Over The Bridge and Amazing Journey providing an early glimpse of what Unbridled can offer, Cavanough and Holland are hoping the model can bring a new generation of racing fans through the ownership door and potentially onto bigger opportunities in the future.
