The AFL have queried Carlton over Lachie Cowan and Will Hayward's respective hospital visits on Saturday night/Sunday morning.

On Sunday afternoon it was revealed that two Carlton players were admitted to hospital on the weekend after complications from alleged recreational drug use.

The players were allegedly partying at one of their teammate's houses on Saturday night, with reports initially claiming at least three players required emergency medical care.

Later news confirmed that Blue Lachie Cowan was taken to hospital to receive medical treatment, and was released hours later.

In a separate incident, Will Hayward later admitted himself to hospital to receive stitches for a minor cut to the head. The two players had been together over the course of Saturday night.

It is understood that some Blues players had been at the Caulfield races before heading out around Chapel St in South Yarra, with some then going back to Hayward's house.

The Blues did not confirm if they are investigating alleged illicit drug use, however, 7News' Xander McGuire has since reported that the AFL has asked the club to provide more information and context around the pair's hospital visits.

If illicit drug use is admitted to or discovered in the club's findings, McGuire's report suggests that the AFL could look to sanction the players involved.

Cassie Zervos' initial report was as follows: "Seven News understands the players were allegedly using an illicit drug - a white powder - but it was laced with something else.

"Cowan suffered a seizure, Hayward fell and hit his head. One source telling Seven News Hayward hit his head on a tap in the shower bending down to pick up his toothbrush."

The report added: "Sources have told Seven News another AFL player and a former Blue allegedly took the same drug suffering an adverse health reaction too."

The club did not respond to Channel 7's questions surrounding the alleged drug use.

Ambulance Victoria has confirmed that they responded to an incident in the early hours of Sunday morning, with Advanced Life Support paramedics attending the scene.

Carlton released this statement on Sunday afternoon:

"The Carlton Football Club can confirm that Lachie Cowan and Will Hayward were admitted to hospital under separate circumstances on Sunday morning.

"Cowan received medical treatment and underwent observation, before being discharged a short time later.

"Will Hayward experienced a minor cut to the head after a fall, and admitted himself to hospital where he received stitches before being discharged.

"The Club has been in regular contact with both players, with priority for their wellbeing and both players have now received the necessary care relating to their separate circumstances."

Additionally, Channel 9 is reporting that Carlton will not impose sanctions on Hayward or Cowan.
