Fast ‘N’ Rocking began well and Michael Walker then eased him to settle back in eighth place, wide with cover. He tracked up nicely at the 600m, switched widest of all rounding the home turn, sprinted quickly to hit the front at the 100m and then went on to score decisively, outclassing his rivals. The Quarterback was near last in the 13-horse field until the home turn, switched deep at the 300m and came with a strong late run for a good second. Kaepernick was seventh, between runners. He put in a run (under riding) at the 200m and kept battling on well for a sound third. Favourite Java went straight to the front, was challenged at the home turn and held the lead until the 200m before finishing a disappointing (3.8 lengths) eighth.
