W S Cox Plate (G1)
The Irish-bred Adelaide put up an outstanding performance to win. He was eased from his wide barrier (13) and settled last in the 14-horse field. Ryan Moore commenced a wide move from the 1000m and tracked up deep to be to be about ninth (three wide) at the 800m. He continued that wide run to challenge on the extreme outside rounding the home turn and then rallied strongly in the closing stages to score by a long neck in fast time. It was an exceptional effort which must rank with some of the very best winners of this race. The favourite Fawkner began well and enjoyed a good trip in fifth place, one off the rails. He moved up well (three deep) nearing the turn, took the lead on straightening and fought gamely for second, putting up a very good effort. Silent Achiever travelled well in seventh place on the rails, improved between runners coming to the home turn and challenged on straightening. She then fought on gamely for a close third in a significant return to her best form. Side Glance worked quite a bit in the early stages before settling behind the leader. He was under riding at the turn and kept fighting on very well for a close-up fourth, putting up a really good effort. Foreteller had a nice run in fifth spot on the rails, got through to be handy on turning for home and battled gamely for a close-up fifth. Happy Trails missed the start, was last early on before recovering to settle in tenth place on the rails. He improved between runners from the 600m and continued to make ground to finish six, just under a length from the winner. Criterion was just past midfield, one off the rails. He was under riding from the 600m and took quite a while to wind-up, eventually making ground to finish (1.5 lengths) seventh, looking suited to further. The three-year-old Sweynesse was eased from barrier 12 and raced near the tail of the field to the 600m. He made ground between runners from the turn to finish eighth, beaten just under two lengths, putting up a very good effort. The Cleaner worked to find the lead, set a solid mid-race tempo as expected and ran a game race before finishing (3.4 lengths) ninth. The colt Wandjina led early, then raced close to the pace to the 600m, and did well in finishing (3.6 lengths) tenth while stablemates Sacred Falls (11th) looked tested by the distance and pace and Royal Descent (12th) may have resented the firm track and also raced well below her best.
