Hawkspur was ridden more aggressively by Jim Cassidy due to an apparent lack of pace in this event and went forward, crossing to the lead at 1200m. He fanned a bit deep rounding the home turn (looking for better going) and stuck on grimly in the straight to win by the barest of margins in a smart performance. Royal Descent had a good run, third on the rails. She got an inside run on turning for home, took a narrow lead at the 150m only to lose in a photo for second, beaten a nose. Bagman was seventh on the rails, saved ground by sticking to the rails at the turn and went to fourth at the 200m. He then kept fighting on surprisingly well to finish third, beaten a length and a quarter. His best runs are over longer trips and he should prove hard to beat in more suitable upcoming races. The favourite Sacred Falls was fourth to the 600m before moving up on passing the 300m but just kept battling on from that point to finish (1.5 lengths) fourth. It was only his second start this preparation and he should continue to improve with racing. The ATC Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Criterion was sixth to the 800m but made a quick (wide) run coming to the 600m due to a steady tempo. But his effort was short-lived and he just battled on from the 300m to finish seventh, beaten just under six lengths while the second favourite Entirely Platinum was outside the leader to the turn but disappointed in the straight, tiring for (seven lengths) last, either not handling to conditions or the step up to weight-for-age class. *ANZ
