Windjammer, top weight (59kg), scored a good firstup win. He began quite well from his inside barrier (1) but was allowed to find his feet and settled seventh on the rails. He switched one off the rails nearing the 600m and moved up three wide on rounding the home turn. He put in a good run at the 250m, dashed clear at the 150m and went on to score impressively. Mr Entertainer was eased early on and settled near last on the rails. He remained there to the home turn, improved in the centre at the 300m and got to fifth at the 200m. He then put in a late bid to just grab second at the post, putting up a nice effort. Pirandello showed good pace to cross from his barrier (8) to take the lead at the 700m. He grabbed a break on straightening and only tired from the 150m for a sound third. The favourite Champagne Cath was a little slow to move but put in quick early run to share the lead. She then eased to race in third spot before moving through on the rails to challenge on straightening. The early efforts told in the latter stages and she tired for fourth.
