Lightly raced five-year-old Velrosso, who was having only his 14th start, was ridden quietly as usual. Jim Cassidy dropped him out at the start and he raced in last place in the small seven-horse field to the 600m. He was travelling well and switched wide on straightening. He was still last at the 300m but he produced a great turn of foot, hit the lead at the 100m and won comfortably at the post. He looks capable of better things. Fireball was sixth one off the rails, moved up wide on rounding the home turn, challenged at the 100m and then battled on well for second. Dee’n’Gee was third on the rails to the turn. Finally got through along the rails at the 100m and battled on for a sound third after having trouble getting fully clear. *ANZ
