The favourite Rock Sturdy missed the start and was last early but Hugh Bowman urged him to improve and he recovered quickly to settle down in third place. He then followed a moderate early tempo before switching out at the 300m. He took a little while to pick up in the sprint home but proved too good in the latter stages, going on to score nicely by half a length. He is quite promising and looks likely to progress to better things. The well supported Lorna May raced in second place before moving up nearing the home turn. She took the lead on passing the 300m and fought back well for a good first-up second, just finding the winner a bit too good in the closing stages. Wouldn’t It Be Nice was back in second last place in the seven-horse field to the 300m. He got through to fifth at the 300m, then switched out and kept running on well for a sound third, being disadvantaged by the moderate early pace. Top weight Burbero was fourth on the rails to the turn, continued to get along the rails in the straight and battled on for (2 lengths) fourth while the early leader Prince Pedro held on fairly well for (2.8 lengths) fifth. *ANZ
