Woodlands Stakes (LR)
Debutant Manaya, an emergency for the race and a halfsister to Hot Danish (Nothin’ Leica Dane), won well here. From barrier 11 she began well but apprentice rider Lester Grace dropped her back to second last. Still well back on the turn she went widest of all on the turn and into the straight made her run right down the outside. She took a few strides to balance then flew down the home straight, took the lead with 100m to run and kept up a strong gallop to the wire for an impressive win. Raiment was wide down the back and around the bend then moved up to challenge the leaders five wide as the field approached the home straight. She took a narrow lead at the 250m but her solid run was never going to hold the winner’s flying finish, yet kept on for a good second. Nonpareil settled worse than midfield (three wide) and had a wall of runners to split as they straightened. She had to go even wider for a run and her chances looked dim. She got the split very late and charged into third at the 50m and held that position to the line.
