Ortensia Stakes (LR)
The Team Hawkes-trained four-year-old Kaepernick scored a most impressive first-up win. The lightly-raced gelding was ridden patiently and remained well back in the 12-horse field before improving between runners at the home turn. He switched across heels at the 200m and then finished powerfully to score a soft win and in fast time. He looks set for a very good preparation and is a horse to watch, with a likely Queensland campaign being his next mission. Inz’n’out was a handy fifth, one off the rails. He moved up really well at the 200m and then battled on for a good second, having no chance with the winner over the closing stages. That’s A Good Idea showed pace to race outside the leader (Furnaces) going at a solid tempo. He briefly got to the front at the 200m and then held on hold third in a photo, putting up a sound effort after working in the early stages.
