The track presented at Awapuni was an absolute bog and the times all day were disturbingly slow as if the footing was heavy and holding like glue. This Listed juvenile over 1200m saw the leader outswim and out-bogsnorkel his rivals. Atenartin sped to the lead and was going well and enjoying the wet conditions across the top before slipping further clear the run home. The gelding never looked like being run down to score by three lengths in 1:18.95 (not the slowest time of the day as that went to the maidens in the opening event with first use of the track that clocked 1:19.67). It was his second win from six starts and both have come on bog tracks as has his only placing. Mexican Tycoon was a good second after rearing at the start and being second last away then improving through to fifth between runners. The still maiden colt was sent up wide to third across the top and reached second turning for home then chased in vain thereafter the winning leader. Tutta La Classe started a clear favourite with third the best she could do after being third last away and then tracking the eventual runner up throughout getting a nice tow into the race. The filly maintained her record of not missing a dividend paying position when reaching third at the 200m. Sweet Elvira the outsider caught the eye for fourth coming from last and wide across the top and the maiden filly looks a swimmer that will run over more ground. Eastern Warrior was third and wide before moving up second the outer across top then wilted the run home to be fourth at the 200m. Tigertiger on debut started second outsider and after a tardy start and being last away was not disgraced at all finishing sixth beaten just under four and a half lengths. Notabadharada was steered the closest in the run home so was in the most holding ground and became anchored so forgive. The other two runners dropped right out exhausted in the ground beaten twenty-four lengths and over thirty lengths. This was not a strong field at all and looks a wet weather result only therefore relevant for slow and heavy tracks and not better footing when the Group races in the main are contested. Mexican Tycoon would be the one runner that looks like he could perform on top of the ground (some cushion or cut still needed) as he is still filling out his frame and gaining raceday ringcraft with each outing.
