This G2 over 1400m at WFA saw the Australian bred and South Island prepared mare Kiwi Ida score a half head win after settling down eighth on a very tricky and biased wet track She sustained her finish to lead just 15m out in what was a tight finish with the first five over the line covered a by a smidgen more than a length. The winners and where they turned for home in race order were seventh (six-off the inside and ten lengths from the leader), fourth (on the fence and length and a half from the leader), sixth (ten-off the inside and four lengths from the leader), third (eight-off the inside and two lengths from the leader), sixth (twelve-off the inside and four lengths from the leader), fourth (twelve-off the inside and two and a half lengths from the leader), ninth (twelve-off the inside and four lengths from the leader) and second (ten-off the inside and two lengths from the leader). The track was a testing Slow8 and therefore wider the better was the play almost all day such was the obvious track bias. Kiwi Ida was winning her thirteenth race from forty starts and today was her first G2 attempt and it resulted in a win. She would win her next start too at G2 albeit against her own sex. Rock On Wood settled back but improved fifth across the top and kept coming the run home looking a win chance at the 100m but went down half a head. He had his chance to win so the wet ground cannot be used as an excuse for him. His next two starts would come at G1 and both be luckless for a fourth (under set weights and penalties) then a third (under WFA scale) and of course they came on better footing (dead conditions). Shadows Cast came home strongly from well back for third beaten less than a length. He would contest G1 at his next two starts and finish fifth (under stet weights and penalties) then fourth (under WFA scale) and run honest and well both times. Secret Allure enjoyed the wet ground and ran accordingly for a close up fourth. Magnum raced close and led at the 300m only to be swamped the final 15m. La Bella Rosa and Dark Princess were not too bad and fought on okay. This was a reasonable strength G2 event at WFA but the footing and associated track bias played the biggest role in the result rather than the ability of the runners. Some form came out of this unsurprisingly afterwards on better and more trustable track conditions.
