The winner of this Listed event over 1400m for Open Class was the 8yo gelding Shadows Cast that had last won a race on November 2 of 2019. He raced seventh then eighth surrounded and came up sixth wide turning for home before unleashing to fourth at the 200m and third at the 100m. Then his memory kicked in and he got up the last 10m to score by a neck in 1:26.97, which was a poor time considering the juvenile winner prior to this clocked just over a second (six lengths superior) faster. The winners and where they came from on the home turn were led (four-off the fence and a neck ahead), led (six-off the inside and five lengths ahead), second (eight-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), led (twelve-off the inside and a length ahead), third (four-off the inside and length and a half from the leader), seventh (fifteen-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), led (twelve-off the inside and length and a half ahead), sixth (twelve-off the inside and four lengths from the leader), sixth (fifteen-off the inside and three lengths from the leader) and ninth (seventeen-off the inside and four lengths from the leader). Six of the ten winners either led (four were in front) or raced top three on the home turn. Shadows Cast won a G1 at the start of 2019 but he had done hardly anything this season so far. Today was his twelfth win in fifty-six outings and was his first at Listed level plus he carried 60kg and goes with his G1 and two at G2 (one of those was a deadhead). They cannot go on forever so where the next wave of Group handicappers will come from is anyone's guess. Second today was Deerfield that carried 59.5kg and he settled back but came through closer in and reached second tuning for home before leading at the 100m. The 7yo gelding was collared the last 10m by the winner and he has not won a race now since October last year. He is yet to win at Blacktype level but has gone around in a lot of the Group races. Third home was Motivation, a two-win only 6yo gelding that settled last and ran home very strongly to be beaten a neck and a nose. His last win came in a Benchmark 65 in November of 2019. He has however run fourth three times at Blacktype with one coming as a 3yo, then the next pair came at G3 then G2. Today was the first time he has finished top three in a Blacktype event. Fourth home was the 6yo mare Pierina that raced well back and wide but ran on well once through the inner and was beaten just under a length and a quarter. Next home was More Wonder that raced second up and came with a good run from second last and being widest on the home turn. He really hit the line hard and could have won if able to be a fraction closer turning for home. There is a fourth at G1 behind Melody Belle under WFA in February on 2019, so this gelding has ability but had a year off racing so there is petrol left in the tank if he stays sound. Streak Of Power for an apprentice ran fifth beaten less than a length and a half after leading up and going clear. He was headed at the 100m and then swamped the last 15m but he was going for four wins in a row and tackling his first Blacktype race today. Colorado Star raced handy and was fourth turning for home before wilting but he won his next start in an Open Handicap. Vigor Winner was next home and after racing handy wide wilted to be beaten just under two and a half lengths and the Australian bred ran favourite in this race too. There was a gap of almost five lengths back to the next finisher La Mia Stella that raced second and was third turning for home before weakening. The rest got beaten almost six lengths and over nine lengths. Roch 'N' Horse ran third favourite and finished a poor eleventh beaten six and a half lengths showing the field depth was seriously lacking here. She is just a two-win 4yo mare and today was her first look at the 1400m The first two home carried big weighs as old war horses showing this field lacked true punch and depth. More Wonder is the one to follow of out of this event if he stays sound.
