The winner of this G3 3yo event over 2000m was the filly Joy Alone that was ridden by the apprentice Wiremu Pinn. After settling down in the rear duo the filly was wide for the second half of the race on a Slow9 track and then she was swept up seventh and deepest turning for home. She came with a sustained surge and got up on the line to win by a short head in 2:10.60. The winners and where they came from on the home turn were led (four-off the fence and a neck ahead), led (six-off the inside and five lengths ahead), second (eight-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), led (twelve-off the inside and a length ahead), third (four-off the inside and length and a half from the leader), seventh (fifteen-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), led (twelve-off the inside and length and a half ahead), sixth (twelve-off the inside and four lengths from the leader), sixth (fifteen-off the inside and three lengths from the leader) and ninth (seventeen-off the inside and four lengths from the leader). Six of the ten winners either led (four were in front) or raced top three on the home turn. Joy Alone was today winning her second race from just six starts and today was her first attempt at Blacktype. She does like cut in the ground or wetter and got through the footing today with no problems whatsoever so her future looks good while the tracks are rain-affected. Second and beaten on the line was the third favourite Milford Sound, a South Island trained runner, which sat well back on the inner the cut the corner to be sixth turning for home He came through second at the 250m and actually led with 25m to go only to be nabbed by the filly. Milford Sound prior to today had won his maiden easily so was stepping up big time here to G3 and against many already other winners. As a maiden in the South Island he had run second at Listed level beaten a nose before his easy maiden win so has come really solid this year. Third home was Daqiansweet Junior, the favourite albeit at $5.70, and he was wide before taking the lead then got headed and sat second the outer. He was third at the 250m but fought very hard and went down a short head and a long head. Fourth home was the filly Yolo that after racing buried back on the inner came through closer in and led turning for home only to be caught and headed the final 25m. She was beaten less than three quarters of a length at the line and has now run fourth at her last two runs at G3. Incredibly she ran fourth in November last year too at G3 so is a filly with scope for sure and she is much better than a one-win horse. Fifth home and beaten two lengths was the Australian bred Tony Be that came from the rear duo on settling and was in fact last across the top and came home well wide out. Next home was Seajetz that was wide on the pace the whole way and he was still third at the 600m and fourth at the 200m then got checked at the 50m. It was a super effort indeed and he clearly loves wet ground. White Lightning settled well back the inner and ran on for seventh through she was beaten over four and a half lengths. Eighth home was Passione that raced wide early and was still trapped deep fifth midrace and she was sixth across the top. He boxed on well all things factored in as he was held up turning for home but got beaten almost six lengths. The rest got beaten over six lengths and up to over nine and a half lengths in what was a rather bunched heap over the line. The four last runners home contained the second favourite Meg, an Australian bred, that settled back and turned for home last and never ever looked likely. This was more a race for what handled the wet footing rather than what ran out the 2000m. There looks to be some tidy types for next season out of the race and a few that were past their best come this race but will be back after a spell. It may have been just a G3 over 2000m but some of the 3yo stamina talent here will measure up next season against the older horses although to be fair the so called cream of the crop this season has been exposed deluxe in Australia so far. Expect the ones a few lengths behind them to be alongside or ahead come early into the Spring of next season.
