Natuzzi showed his class with a first win clockwise and the natural backrunner was way superior to a depleted field he met here at Listed level. The big former South Island trained sprinter is now prepared from a North Island base (Byerley Park or South Auckland), still by Paul Richards, and will be a force in any sprint feature in New Zealand such is his closing power. He can carry weight and it was the ninth win in twenty-nine starts today by the 6yo gelding today after settling last then being detonated up a middle path the run home. Regular rider Chris Johnson knows what Natuzzi can do and the win was a lot easier than the margin suggests as he clocked 1:09.78 under 59kg. His next target will be the G1 Telegraph Handicap in January next year, a race he was a close second in at the start of this year under 54.5kg. He will be getting a lot more weight this time under the set weights and penalties scale now used for the race that was once a time-honoured regular handicap sprint. Sadly the changing of historically important races and how they are handicapped now means both the G1 Railway and G1 Telegraph are under the same system and it is to the detriment of both. New Zealand does not have the depth to have G1 sprints under such a scale so why it is done seems both counter-intuitive and counter-productive. Trepidation ran on well for second in her first show of form for a new stable. The mare has a big finish and loves a hot pace. She has run second to Natuzzi before at Listed level in the Lightning at Trentham. And will be getting sick of the sight of him. The mare ran thirteenth in the G1 Telegraph in January this year from a dud draw when getting just 2kg from the runner up Natuzzi. Today in the Newmarket she received 6kg so it will be intriguing as to the gap come the 2015 Telegraph Handicap. Spitfire ran on well once clear the run home and does find New Zealand field depth much more too her liking. Ruud Awakening had every chance when fourth after taking the front halfway up the run home and she is yet to regain her best form. The now 4yo mare has not won a race since the G1 Diamond Stakes here at Ellerslie as a juvenile in March of 2013. Hannah Mary ran well and considering she is just a three-win mare it does put some perspective on the form and race worth. Pinzaara can be forgiven in finishing last as apart from knuckling at the start then speeding to the lead the mare once headed off at the 300m copped a bad check at the 150m. The winner Natuzzi is a serious enough sprinter and Trepidation plus Spitfire Lady will pay there way this summer throughout New Zealand in feature sprints.
