The reputation got dented for several fillies in this G2 mile where the rank outsider Saavoya sprinted best the run home to lead and then held on. She was one of three in the field for the Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman yard and was recording her second win seven starts. It was her first blacktype outing and the way she is bred it does seem certain that middle distance will not be an issue but also wet ground is no concern too. She was wide early before getting over fifth and one-off and clocked 1:34.61 to score by a head from a game Sardaaj that led and once headed came back very bravely. She may have won if the race had been a fraction longer such was her tenacious kick back on the inner. Tavy the favourite was third and a tad disappointing as she did not ping as well as hoped when asked but kept coming to the line. The fourth finisher Charmont found the line better than Tavy and on breeding will revel in middle distance plus her value is assured already being by the recently lost super sire High Chaparral. Thee Auld Floozie ran on well late from the back and may not be just a wet tracker. She is the stablemate of the runner up and they give an in form Stephen Marsh stable some filly firepower for the rest of the summer and over autumn. The rest disappointed and in particular Darci’s Dream that came into the race with a last start G1 placing. It does make the 3yo filly formlines perhaps not as strong in places as first thought and whether she was fully cranked up today having not run for seven weeks is another possible excuse. The filly form this season has seen several differing winners worryingly and no stand out yet has said I am the dominant lass with Platinum Witness the one at the top right now. However with middle distance features then the Derby and Oaks to come the opportunity to stand up and be anointed the top gun gal is still there for the taking.
