This was an attack-fest from the outset in lanes and some of the rides on juveniles in this were to put it kindly, tactical brain fades. It was as if the reputations of so many in the field needed testing and some riders that should know better bought into in a drag race and gassing pre-race flawed speed map/script. The winner Marky Mark came with a muscular Wahlberg-like surge to win in 1:10.79 that compares admirably to the G1 Railway held later in the day run and won in 1:10.34. Marky Mark could not keep up early such was the madness of many ahead and as the sectionals show such stupid speeds will always set up the closer. The son of Makfi is unbeaten and does have a chart-topping presence about him though the chances he will strike such a race run like this again are slim. Maritimo was game in defeat and the filly actually benefited from an average start as it kept her out of the early madness. She had a nice run between runners and strode to the front inside the final 200m but fought well when the winner collared her at the 100m. Showboy was the eyecatcher and he has some character to place after such a rocky run at times. His will to win should stand him in good stead once the G1 juvenile events come around. Battle Time did well to run on after a tardy start though the way the race was run being sluggish early was a help. Then the reputations of Windborne (fifth) and Rocanto (sixth) were demolished and possibly exposed as in hard run races they are vulnerable. Windborne (Matthew Cameron) was attacked in front by Rocanto (James McDonald) savagely for the opening quarter. Rocanto then took the lead across the top and poured it on but then got attacked himself by the trapped wide Jacquetta (stablemate of runner up Maritimo). The opening 800m gassed any chance that Windborne, Rocanto and Jacquetta had plus the likes of China Silk was in an even wider lane at times for rider Michael Coleman embarrassingly. They finished fifth, sixth, eighth (Jacquetta beaten almost fourteen lengths) and ninth (China Silk beaten over thirty-four lengths) in the nine-horse race and will all sleep very well. This result is skewed by the mad tactical riding of a few and apart from hampering the progress of some juveniles and even souring a few after such an experience, we still do not know the true pecking order. More evidence when some of these clash again and less race pace insanity under the guise of horsemanship would help.
