This G3 over 2000m under the WFA scale saw last years winner, the Australian bred 6yo mare Fiscal Fantasy, return to winning form and score a comfortable two length win. The last win of this galloper came in this very race a year prior although since she has run a close second at G1 (beaten a neck) and finished runner up at G3. It was poignant that over 2000m the first three home in this event were Australian bred one and two and a French bred ran third. This trio were the only overseas bred runners in the field and they ended up way superior to the rest. The winners and where they turned for home in race order were seventh (three-off the inside and nine lengths from the leader), third (four-off the inside and length and a half from the leader), fifth (five-off the inside and length and a half from the leader), fourth (one-off the inside and length and a half from the leader), second (three-off the inside and a neck from the leader), third (three-off the inside and length and a half from the leader), fifth (on the inside and three lengths from the leader), led (on the inner and a length in front), tenth (four-off the inside and five lengths from the leader) and second (three-off the inside and a neck from the leader). Fiscal Fantasy today was winning her sixth race in thirty outings and in thirteen Blacktype outings she now has three wins at G3 (all WFA over 2000m) as well as placings at G1, G3 and Listed level. The time today was 2:03.43 and her other two G3 wins at WFA over 2000m have come at 2:03.33 in this a year ago and 2:04.43 at Awapuni. Second home was the Australian bred 7yo gelding Charles Road that was back from getting absolutely creamed in Australia four times in a row from G1 once, G3 twice and a regular Open Class event once. He raced in the trail on the inner and fought hard to the line for his second placing, which was his first top three in New Zealand since September 2018 when winning an Open Handicap at Hastings. Third how was the French bred six year old entire Vadavar that started a clear favourite and raced back tenth on the inner until turning for home. He was held up for a run when angled out sixth at the 200m by a wall ahead up the middle and then was steered back inwards to come through third at the 100m closer in and he finished off the race gamely. Fourth home and beaten four lengths was Sherrif, a natural backrunner, that turned for home wide out in sixth spot and was fifth at the 200m and then reached fourth at the 100m. Fifth home was the 8yo gelding Sultan Of Swing that ran on well from eighth surrounded turning for home. Roger That, the G1 Auckland Cup (3200m) winner here at $49 last season (March), ran sixth after being wide early and then moving up second the outer. He was third midrace and fourth wide turning for home but boxed on okay to be beaten just over six lengths. Next home was On The Rocks, already a G1 winner, that sat second the outer then soon led and kicked two lengths clear turning for home. Once he was headed at the 200m he got swamped to be fifth at the 100m then ended up seventh at the line beaten over six and a half lengths. The next four came home beaten almost eight lengths and up to just under ten lengths. Then the last trio came in beaten almost thirteen lengths, almost beaten sixteen lengths and Poker Face tailed them in beaten over sixty-four lengths and having bled so he now gets a mandatory three month stand down. The first three home were dominant at the finish and all came closer in suggesting the other riders did not read the track very well at all. The winner and third finisher can shine at WFA this season and the runner up is a handicap stayer that now away from Australia he can start paying his way again.
