This G3 mile at set weights and penalties was run and won by the Irish bred Gino Severini that wore down the leaders after racing third the inner early then being eased off midrace to be fourth the outer. The 7yo gelding turned for home third and got to the front with just 5m to go to score by a head and he clocked 1:34.75 The winners and where they came from in race order were co-leader (three off the inside), led (one-off the fence and half a length ahead), fourth (six-off the inside and four lengths from the leader), sixth (eighth-off the fence and eight lengths from the leader), third (one-off the fence and one and a half lengths from the leader), challenged (two-off the inside), third (four-off the inside and two lengths from the leader) and eight (eight-off the inside and four lengths from the leader). Gino Severini was in great form at the start of this year and even ran fourth at G1 under WFA beaten less than two lengths. The form from that Te Rapa race however has been very erratic since with the first two home being big multiple flops since resuming. Today was the sixth win from twenty-eight starts by Gino Severini and his very first Blacktype success since coming here from a non-winning Hong Kong stint and before that Ireland, where he won once. The runner up was the Australian bred The Mitigator that soon worked to the lead as per usual and he kicked hard to be only collared very late. He is a one dimensional galloper behind a leader only but often steals races and forces rivals to leave it too late. Sultan Of Swing showed some Group form for the first time in this campaign and was ridden by an apprentice and in fact today was recording just his second placing in all runs this season. The 8yo was a G1 second at WFA last season behind Melody Belle but the form bar the winner from that race has been very suspect since. Fourth home today was Demonetization and he ran his usual honest race and he has run super in his last three events that have come at Listed, G2 and now G3. Vadavar, the French bred, ran home attractively for fourth after being a clear last midrace and then being angled eighth and widest turning for home. He ran home gamely and is a big race winner in waiting after he ran third at G1 under WFA in the Kelt Capital over 2040m behind Melody Belle and Avantage in mid-October. This 6yo entire is a strong closer and he is easily WFA standard in New Zealand. There was a gap back to the sixth finisher in Aligns With Me that fought on from fifth the inner mostly. Beauden finished next and was okay but somewhat disappointing after being seventh and wide turning for home. Charles Road plugged on from eighth the outer and ninth turning for home and he wants further than the mile today. Tiptronic was poor again and does not seem to have come up this season so far while Redcayenne was outclassed. This was a G3 standard race and quite competitive at the finish but a lot of the runners are wanting middle distance so today was more a stepping-stone towards bigger fish to fry.
