There was no surprise here that a mare would win this G1 at WFA over 2000m as they are the dominant force in New Zealand racing these days and have been cleaning up deluxe each season for quite a while now. Concert Hall got her first G1 win today and came the widest on the home turn and from last to do so where the first three home were covered by a smidgen more than half a length. The winners and where they came from on the home turn were seventh (four-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), seventh (seven-off the inside and eight lengths from the leader), seventh (three-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), fourth (six-off the inside and two lengths from the leaders), third (four-off the inside and a length from the leader), third (five-off the inside and half a length from the leader), eighth (eight-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), seventh (eight-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), eighth (eight-off the inside and three lengths from the leader) and ninth (seven-off the inside and three and a half lengths from the leader). Concert Hall, a 6yo mare that was having her twenty-third outing today, would finally get her G1 spoil and in doing so was winning her ninth race. She has been in stupendous form this season and in five runs has finished first or second each time and in the process won at G1, G2 and G3. To show her versatility the mare has scored in good, dead and slow footing this time in and is in career best form. She has won up to 2300m at G3 but now she seems most lethal at 2000m as evidenced by her win today by a long neck in 2:01.93. Concert Hall apart from her nine wins and four seconds has never finished third but has run fourth four times in her record and three of them have come at G3. Supera, in her last run before motherhood beckons, ran a game second and tried ever so hard to get that G1 win on her resume. She raced eighth the outer then was angled wider on the home turn and unleashed to be fifth at the 200m and then third at the 100m before reaching second with 15m to go. The also 6yo mare had seven goes at G1 for three seconds, a third, a fourth, a sixth and a seventh. In A Twinkling ran a third close up after racing second the outer and leading turning for home. The Australian bred 5yo was only headed the last 20m and fought ever so hard to the line. Fourth home was the favourite Rock On Wood that had every chance to be fair and was beaten almost two and a half lengths. He raced sixth the inner and turned for home seventh before working off and being fifth at the 100m but had his chance to be fair. He reached fourth at the 50m but never kicked on like the others. Fifth home and going absolutely massive was Tiptronic at over $30 after racing fourth wide for the first half of the race and third and wide for the second. He was beaten less than three lengths and actually reached second at the 200m before such was the magnitude of his effort. Charles Road finished sixth and ran okay from fifth on settling and sixth turning for home. The Australian bred was held up fractionally inside the final 200m. Seventh home was Gino Severini that battled away from the trail on the inner then came On The Rocks that raced seventh then sixth wide with cover to the home turn following Tiptronic. Vernanme led up and stopped to finish ninth while the French bred Vadavar after a tardy start never ever cleared the rear duo. Fiscal Fantasy ran a shocker and tailed the field home beaten eight lengths after settling back and being eighth wide across the top. She was last at the 200m and never ever looked a danger. The first three home all like a scrap and once again unsurprisingly at G1 a female galloper has come out on top, as has been the norm in New Zealand for many seasons now. The winner came home the quickest last 600m but only had to run 34.19 to do so and win this suggesting the work was done early on in the race and also overall the time was not convincingly fast either. The domination of mares in New Zealand racing has become the norm now and today there were three runners in this G1 field 1 for a first, second and a last home.
