The G3 1400m was run on a very iffy Hastings track manmade biased beyond belief as usual and today it was unfair barrier draw wise. Of the 10 races on the day barriers 7 or wider won eight races and the first race went to gate six (small field) and the last race gate four when it looked like the footing had finally equalized (it was as tricky everywhere). This was the fastest run 1400m on the day substantially and saw Ringo fresh up bury his rivals and just knock off the odds on pop Get That Jive that drew the dreaded gate one today. Ringo is a strapping son of Fastnet Rock and the 7yo gelding after sitting last was unleashed down the outside and got up to score by a head in 1:25.88, which was the only race to break 1:26 for the 1400m all day. It was his eighth win from twenty-eight starts and to show what his favourite trip is today was a sixth success at 1400m. Get That Jive got 6.5kg from the winner so in that respect no excuses but his rider did have to get him away from the inside early rather than using the gate properly and that counted at the line. The 4yo was second up and almost won a G3 at just his ninth start so his future seems assured and it is worth noting again that no runner won all day from the ace and in fact no runner won from gates two or three either. Antonio Lombardo ran a brave third after being wide and then moving up into contention across the top. Blathwayt ran well for a stayer fresh up to get fourth after missing away and then taking the inside route across the top to save ground. Reilly Lincoln against showed she is suspect at the 1400m but drew gate three so may need to be given one more chance at the trip. Admiral showed his last start romp at Listed level (where the third finisher came out today and won the G1 feature) was a total fluke, as after leading up again punctured badly to finish seventh beaten over eight lengths. Taurus was dreadful as was Justlikeyasister. Ringo can win at a higher level in New Zealand but has been found out in Australia before so should be kept at home to keep the blacktype beat. Get That Jive has a decent race in him in New Zealand for sure and may have a look at Australia sooner rather than later.
