Sacred Falls Hawke's Bay Gneas (G2)

Age: 3yo Type: OPEN

This G2 3yo 1400m saw a demolition job by Mongolian Falcon and he did not just dent some reputations he fair dinkum panel-beated them into utter submission. Mongolian Falcon gave his sire Fastnet Rock a second blacktype win today but this colt is Australian bred and he now looks the dominant 3yo in New Zealand at the moment on the display. The colt took a two length lead after 200m and had that buffer and then more near the home turn before powering clear to score by five lengths in 1:26.45 and it could have been more scarily. His dam is the Galileo mare Amazing Beauty so there is high hope he will run middle distance at this stage and that sire has just had an epic Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe siring the first three home and all from the same yard incredibly. Jon Snow ran home stoutly for second albeit distant and was fresh up since winning his debut in May as a juvenile so has scope galore. Heroic Valour was until today unbeaten had his colours lowered deluxe when a distant and floundering third after sitting second and being unable to go with the winner at any stage. It has been a reality check couple of weeks for Team Te Akau and today was another dose with the Australian bred colt. Improved footing is his only chance at redemption now. O’Reilly’s Choice ran on well for fourth after sitting last and he has a lesser Stakes race win in him properly placed this season. Wyndspelle was okay after losing his position and the stablemate of the winner may not have the overall class of the victor but is still a useful colt. Ugo Foscolo the favourite was poor in finishing sixth beaten ten lengths after a tardy start as then had to kick up closer in so was racing in the biased slower lanes. He may in fact be just a sprinter but until he gets back onto less biased and better footing then a more decisive assessment can be made. Barcelo can be forgiven as he drew gate one and the rest got beaten some big margins and were outclassed. The favourite for the G1 2000 Guineas (1600m) was secured today such was the dominant win by Mongolian Falcon as he put to the sword all his serious threats and on better footing he will improve further too. He has size and speed and looks the part plus can adapt should track bias rear its head and that is happening way too much now in New Zealand with the false rail addiction a major part of the blame to apportion. Jon Snow can only improve after finishing second at G2 resuming on tricky footing and Heroic Valour after losing his unbeaten tag now has the pressure well and truly off.
