This Listed Open Handicap over 1200m saw the Australian bred Evalina win but also a rarity occur with a triple deadheat for third. The winners and where they turned for home in race order were third (four-off and half a length from the leader), fourth (three-off and two lengths from the leader), led (one-off the inside and a length in front), third (three-off the inside and two lengths from the leader), eighth (five-off the inside and three-lengths from the leader), sixth (five-off the inside and two lengths from the leader), third (three-off the inside and a length from the leader) and third (five-off the inside and half a length from the leader). Evalina was unable to get any Blacktype when prepared in Australia but once sent to a New Zealand yard she came up trumps at her second start with this Listed win in 1:09.82 by two lengths The 4yo mare was last across the top then swept past them and led at the 100m to bolt in and record her third win from seven starts and clearly her most valuable so far. What A Smasher raced sixth or seventh the outer and then came up deep to third turning for home and reached second at the 200m. Sweepstake disputed the lead early then once headed lost her spot to be sixth or seventh the inner, so had the eventual runner up outside her on settling. She was last turning for home but ran home strongly to share the third place honours with two others on the post. Rock 'N' Affair raced fourth wide then third wide and challenged across the top before leading at the 300m only for the overland effort to take a toll and be headed and third at the 100m. She did well to share third after such a tough trip. Satu Lagi came from second last and wide across the top to be sixth and deepest turning in then sustained a strong run to make the judge really earn his money. A decent gap of almost five lengths then back to sixth in Amastar with the rest beaten up to almost ten lengths. The favourite and leader Ferrando under 60kg led up and stopped badly. This was a modest Listed event overall but gains oomph with the very impressive winner Evalina showing the sprinting gap between Australia and New Zealand rather vividly was immense. Evalina at her next start after this would finish third at G1in a faster run race than today and came from miles back turning for home too.
