The track threw up a strange result here in the Listed Easter Cup with the winner Sir Singo winning his seventh race and first ever piece of blacktype. The Australian bred is not a true wet tracker but handled it better than the rest and was one of four runners in the field at double figures with the outsider finishing third in Needastar. Scapolo the favourite ran on well too late for second under 59kg but never looked in a winning position. He gave the winner 6kg and a big start the run home but got to within a length at the line. Sir Singo raced a handy third and when distant at the 200m looked unlikely to win but the two up front stayed closer in and he was angled wider. It made all the difference between winning and losing for sure on such treacherous footing that made racing a complete raffle. Needastar fresh up nearly caused a colossal boilover after hitting the front at the 200m. Timy Tyler, a noted wet tracker, ran on gamely for fourth beaten a length and a half. Some proven big race and many wins performers in The Solitaire and El Chico finished second last and last beaten over eleven and twelve lengths respectively. Forget the result as having any meaning as the footing was deplorable as a betting surface and Riccarton will not want to serve up anything like this again if it wants to restore bettor faith.
