The Australian bred juvenile filly Smart ‘N’ Sassy remained unbeaten with a dominant Listed win over 1000m. She was also part of four wins on the day for the Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards training partnership and that includes the G1 feature today, the 1000 Guineas for 3yo fillies. They have had a monster week having snared the G1 2000 Guineas here last week and these are the only two G1 races held in a season in the South island. Smart ‘N’ Sassy had some issues pre-start but has such a big stride that when she lengthened and took the front at the 200m it was race over. The 57.41 clocked is a tidy time but chute (800m-1200m) times at Riccarton are always bionic. The second and third finishers What Choux Want and Dontpokethetiger both disputed the early pace with the latter leading across the junction and the former sitting second. Poignantly in a six-horse field the three fillies filled the trifecta. Smart ‘N’ Sassy looks a name to remember and when she is tried clockwise will answer some questions but it should be noted she has bolted in that direction in a trial.
