Jimmy Mac has been a revelation this season and it continued today with a win in the G3 New Zealand Cup over 3200m. The 7yo gelding won his first three runs this time in from 1600m up to 2500m then after a five weeks gap finished third at 2500m before being topped off nicely to score today. He came with a stayers surge to run down a clear leader and get up with just 25m to travel and clock 3:21.01. It was his first Group win and seventh win from twenty-six starts. He is now in line for a 250K bonus should he win either the Wellington Cup (3200M) or Auckland Cup (3200m) and will pocket a million dollars should he capture the hattrick or Cupstrick. The fact he has won on all types of footing makes the weather irrelevant in his drive to snare a bonus or two. The runner up Southern Sav was game in defeat having been back and wide then making a sharp move to lead clearly 1000m out. He only got caught late and was five lengths ahead of the third finisher Benzini that ran a good race under his clear topweight of 59kg. Sureasyouwereborn that ran dead last a week ago here ran on powerfully for fourth in a major form reversal. Mister Impatience was honest when fifth and would have liked a more yielding track but no doubting his stamina. King Kamada had every chance while Blood Brother the 10yo ran on down the outer late. The rest either could not stay or the footing was too firm or they had too hard a run throughout. Blathwayt was disappointing considering he jumped only a smidgen longer in the market than the winning favourite. Celebrity Miss can be forgiven having been three-wide the whole way and spent not unsurprisingly the run home. The guarantors of the Stayers Bonus will be a tad uneasy as Jimmy Mac will find the left-handed way of going at Trentham for the Wellington Cup not an issue. It is when and if he runs in the Auckland Cup at Ellerslie clockwise that could see him competing for a million dollars plus the stake in what will be the mother of all payouts for a thoroughbred in New Zealand.
