This Listed mile for Open Handicappers produced a very tight finish with the first seven runners home covered by just a length. The first three home were separated by noses with the deep Southerner in Tommy Tucker getting up in the last stride. He was given a time of 1:35.03 that mysteriously is identical to the race before, a Listed 3yo filly mile, so must be tempered with a word of caution. Tommy Tucker was winning his eleventh race in thirty-seven starts and he is versatile plus today was caught wide handy but got in fourth the outer after 600m. This clearly won him the race as he could not have covered any more ground and scored at this point so the ride by apprentice Jacob Lowry warrants kudos for sure. Seize The Moment soon led and controlled matters so to be run over on the line was surprising as he was kicking best at the 200m. El Sagrado the Great Britain bred mare ran another good race and after trailing would not flinch the run home so to be beaten noses was commendable indeed for this two-win galloper. Pepper Mill showed he would handle this class with a game fourth after sitting outside the pace and rallying gamely to be beaten threequarters of a length. El Chico after sitting handy the inner poked through to finish fifth and the 11yo is still competitive so may yet go around next season. He was having start 132nd today so a century and a half outings is possible for the old warrior. Five Kings was an eyecatcher from last after being away awkwardly as usual and he really was coming well closer in the final stages. He would have won but for his tendency to give away lengths at the start. Scapolo under 61kg was brave to be beaten a length as he got back on the inner due to being crowded early. Nashville warmed up too late down the outer and is a one-dimensional miler. The Diamond One again showed that Riccarton is her bogey track as she seems to save her worst for this venue but was at least running on a shade down the outer. There will be winners to come out of this for sure but mostly in the South Island as only a trio of the North Islanders look capable of winning back in their own area. A bunched finish is often a negative for future form worth and this was visually a grandstander with the first seven home of the twelve runners covered by one length. Some of these may not be seen out next season.
