Welcome Stakes (LR)

Age: 2yo Type: OPEN

Once again the Riccarton track was posted as a Good3 but the times were ordinary and almost every runner was being angled well away from the inside and up the middle lanes the run home and that looks ridiculous on a supposed dry track day. The winners and where they turned for home today were third deep, second wide, second centre track, third closer in (but still three and four-off the rail), co-leader (five off the fence), fifteenth (four and five off the rail and three and a half lengths from the leader), co-leader outer (three off the rail and five or six off soon after), twelfth (third widest runner), led (five off the rail), third (eight-off the rail) and second outer (four off the rail). This Listed 2yo only 1000m race drew a small field and saw the only race winner in it Miss Federer start odds on and prevail by a head after disputing the pace on the outer. The filly was headed and third at the 300m looking a smidgen in trouble but fought back to second at the 150m and kept coming. She led at the 50m and held on to clock 58.04, which down the Riccarton chute is actually not that quick a time as the track record and it is the National record too is a bionic and an impossible to accept 54.20 set in 2006 by Ticklish (the dam of G1 1000 Guineas filly runner today in Melt). It was her second win from three starts and her first Blacktype success obviously. Challa raced fourth or fifth not far away at all and then strode through at the 400m to lead at the 300m and looked a surefire winner thereafter. The Australian bred gelding however was outfought again and has now finished runner up in all three outings so far. He beat home Miss Faders at his first outing but has since bowed too her superiority since. Diva Express disputed the pace closest in and was headed off at the 300m but fought well albeit a length and three-quarters from the winner. Touchabeel on debut was a game fourth after racing fifth or fourth deep throughout and she has scope for sure. All About Magic, also on debut, fought on okay for fifth after racing seventh then sixth and the filly can only improve for the experience. The rest got beaten double digit lengths and were outclassed. Not a very strong field at all and it would not surprise if the fourth finisher Touchabeel ends up the best of this field later into the season.
