Canterbury Belle (LR)
This 3yo filly only Listed event saw Watchmaker clean them up easily at $8 and she was awarded the time of 1:07.90, which is faster than almost all G1 winners ever in Australia for some realism and perspective. The times at Riccarton and Trentham (North Island), where both tracks have a chute, are never to be seriously believed as the times awarded are so bionic and clearly for example they have distance problems across the dog leg for example. Never ever take times seriously at these two tracks for 800m to 1200m times. The winners and where they came from in race order were sixth (three-off the fence and two and a half lengths from the leader), sixth (six-wide off the inside and three and a half lengths from the leader), co-leader (three-wide off the inside), seventh (two-off the inside and three and a half lengths from the leader), third (four-off the inside and two lengths from the leader), thirteenth (one-off the inside and six lengths from the leader), led (three-off the inside and a length in front), eighth (one-off the inside and four and a half lengths from the leader), neck (second on the inner a neck behind the leader), eleventh (two-off the inside and five lengths from the leader), second (two-off the inside and half a length from the leader) and fourth (four-wide off the inside and a neck from the leader). Watchmaker was fresh up since a sound second mid-August and she surged home impressively here from eighth and one-off the inside. The filly led at the 150m such was the speed of her finish and she ended up winning by almost a length and a half for her second win from just three outings. Obviously it was her first Blacktype attempt and success and she looks a filly with a lot more to come and a South Island success story. Laced With Gold, at her fourth start this season, ran her second runners up effort but this time it came at Listed level. The filly that is a North Islander raced fourth in the trail on the inner and worked off near the home turn and reached second at the 150m but was never going well enough to beat the winner. The third finisher was Stella Creek, another South Island trained filly, and she raced fifth and wide with cover before moving up third turning for home and she led at the 200m before being headed 50m later but fought on well. Fourth home at $1.90 was the North Island filly Cornflower Blue that was seventh but four-wide and was sixth across the junction but still out four-wide to the home turn. She battled on okay for fourth to be beaten just over three lengths and is a forgive as you cannot sit that deep in times posted as fast as this, even if very fanciful, at this trip. Miss Tycoon Rose at $31 ran on well from eleventh and wider with cover to be beaten just over three lengths and the Australian bred maiden filly is a winner in waiting. There was then almost five lengths back to The Gift at $60 that was third wide and then on the pace deep across the top then turned for home for fifth and looked to be battling when eighth at the 200m. Too her credit considering the run she had the maiden filly dug deep and finished sixth and is another winner in waiting. Next home was Walkthisswey at $63 that raced eighth the inside to the home turn and fought on to be beaten five lengths. Lovebug was next home after being wide then second the outer and she challenged near the home turn and actually led at the 300m before weakening to be beaten almost six lengths. Showemhowitsdone was next home beaten over seven lengths after settling down last and being third last turning for home. The rest were beaten almost eight lengths and up to thirty-nine lengths at the post. The winner was very strong the last furlong so has more success in store. The hotpot Cornflower Blue was a forgivable fourth considering the trip she received and there as merit in the efforts of Miss Tycoon Rose, The Gift and Walkthisswey. The chute times here and at Trentham are totally unbelievable and the 1:07.90 posted here is a totally not true for 1200m. The modern record here for 1200m is 1:07.01 set in 2008 by Pushy Too and she never won another race. She beat seven other runners that day and second and third never won another race either, fourth, fifth and sixth won one race each afterwards while the last runner home never won another race either. Enough said about that thoroughly misleading race the better. The simple locked in stone formula is never ever believe times from 800m to 1200m at Riccarton or Trentham.
