The winner of this Listed Open Handicap over 1400m was the North Island raider in Streak Of Power that scored by a short head and clocked 1:21.67 on a Good3 track. The 4yo gelding was ridden by an apprentice in Wiremu Pinn and he was winning today his fifth race in eighteen starts and today was his second attempt at Blacktype. The winners and where they came from on the home turn were seventh (seven-off the fence and two and a half lengths from the leader), fourth (four-off the fence and two lengths from the leader), ninth (six-off the fence and three lengths from the leader), led (on the inside and a length in front), third (seven-off the fence and a length from the leader), second (two-off the fence and a neck from the leader), fourth (seven-off the fence and two lengths from the leader), second (four-off the inside and half a length from the leader) and third (on the inner and length and a half from the leader). Streak Of Power raced second the outer and led narrowly at the 300m before being headed at the 200m then he dug the deepest to lead at the 5m and just got there at the line. Second home was She's A Lady, a former North Islander, that was now in the Terri Rae yard and had won a trial in April then scored fresh up and today gained her second piece of Blacktype in seven attempts. She raced third the outer and came through on the fence at the 300m then led at the 200m and 100m before being nabbed the last 5m. She had in her previous yard run second at Listed level as a juvenile and in five other Blacktype outings had finished fourth three times. Third home was Belle Fascino, a North Island trained mare that has been in the South Island for a while now and is very much in form. In fact at her last seven runs she has been top three every time and that includes two G3 wins. She raced fourth the inner today and then came up wider turning for home and raced a close third at the 200m and 100m. The 7yo mare fought hard and went down a short head and a neck. Fourth home was Khimar War that raced ninth the inside and then came off and ran home well up the middle from sixth at the 200m. Fifth home was the North Island trained What A Smasher that was keen early and raced fifth the outer before being wide at the 600m to the home turn. The 5yo mare was still fifth at the 200m and 100m and fought on okay to be beaten three and a half lengths at the line. Sixth home was Scarfi, another former North Islander and the stablemate of the runner up. The 6yo mare raced eighth or ninth the outer and was noticed running on deeper but was still beaten almost five lengths. Seventh home was Midnight Runner that raced sixth or seventh the outer and fought on okay the run home to be beaten just over five lengths. Next home was Augustace that was wide then led and once headed at the 200m, tried to fight on before tiring and he was almost beaten six lengths. Ninth home was Severine that raced back and wide and kept coming deeper while Carson River settled last and ran on a shade to be beaten seven lengths. The rest got beaten almost eight lengths and up to nine and half lengths with Enzo's Lad (a dual G1 winner in January of 2018 and 2019) finishing at the tail. This was an on pacer finish and it is worth noting that of the nine races held today that seven of them came from the first four on settling. The first three home were slogging it out over the final 200m and the one key thread is that all are current or former North Island trained gallopers.
