The winner of this Listed juvenile event was the first starting North Island trained raider in Unusual Countess that ran a well backed third favourite on what was a Good3 rated Riccarton track. The filly sat second the outer and led at the 350m then held on by a nostril fare at the line to clock 1:10.14. The winners and where they came from on the home turn were seventh (seven-off the fence and two and a half lengths from the leader), fourth (four-off the fence and two lengths from the leader), ninth (six-off the fence and three lengths from the leader), led (on the inside and a length in front), third (seven-off the fence and a length from the leader), second (two-off the fence and a neck from the leader), fourth (seven-off the fence and two lengths from the leader), second (four-off the inside and half a length from the leader) and third (on the inner and length and a half from the leader). Unusual Countess had won her prior trial too so is undefeated and not many runners in a season at all win their debut at Blacktype but she did. Second home and a lip from victory was Mackenzie Glow that had raced well in four starts prior for a win and two seconds plus a game fourth as well. He raced in the rear duo the outer today and then was angled widest turning for home before storming home from fifth at the 200m and second at the 50m. It is interesting to note today that he ran as fourth favourite in this event. Third home was Fireglow, the stablemate of the runner up, that raced fourth poised mostly and he reached at the 300m then fought on well to be beaten less than a length and a half. He was capturing his first piece of Blacktype and is still a maiden plus was ridden by an apprentice in Kavish Chowdhoory. Fourth home and was the favourite Art De Triomphe that raced third behind the leaders and reached second at the 300m before being fourth at the 25m. The filly was only beaten less than a length and three-quarters. Fifth home was Mozzarella that raced fifth mostly and never lifted the closing stages to be beaten three lengths. The rest got beaten home over eight lengths and up too and over fourteen lengths. The runner up in this Mackenzie Lad bolted in at his next start. The first five home in this Listed event all have some ability so the win by a visiting debutante was better than it can ever read.
