The winner of this G3 mile was the impressive up and coming 5yo gelding Lord Darci that in the end blew his opposition away over the final furlong on a Heavy 10 track. Lord Darci was having just his twelfth start today and of course it was his first ever Blacktype outing plus his record at the mile is super with five runs now for three wins, a second by a nose and a very good fifth. His second by a nose came at Oamaru and that would also provide the same quinella in this event with Summer Festival the winner that day, the leader on settling down. After settling down eighth Lord Darci had improved a spot across the top then strode into fourth turning for home clearly handling the testing conditions for rider Terry Moseley, who was having his first mount on the gelding. He strode through and led at the 300m then proved far too strong winning by two lengths in 1:44.58 to record his fourth win plus his versatility is clear for all to see having now won on Good, Slow and Heavy ground. The leader Summer Festival ran a game race after being two lengths clear in the lead and getting most of this field well and truly off the bit. Verry Flash ran an enormous third after settling a long way back with the 8yo gelding being ridden today by apprentice in Faye Lazet. He was fourteenth and the widest runner turning for home but unleashed hard wide out and sustained that run to get third the final 50m although he was distant being six and a half lengths from second money. Fourth home at $55 was Bluey's Chance that had run a super fifth in this same race last year at $74. The 9yo gelding today was crowded at the start and settled well back on the inner before coming through the closest in across the top and reaching fourth near the home turn. He did get into third before the home turn and was still there at the 200m and 100m before only being run over the last 50m to miss a dividend paying position. Fifth home was Frankie The Fox, that was live on a hattrick, and after being fifth wide early was eighth across the top but he kept on fighting well to finish fifth and was just over ten lengths away at the line. Next home was the 10yo gelding William Wallace that as usual settled down out the back and he was still a long way back across the top to the home turn. He was then steered a middle path the run home and reached tenth at the 200m before running on okay to end up sixth beaten just over eleven lengths. Kusuda was next home having trailed third early then being a chasing second across the top to the home turn but he weakened out badly. Kick On the favourite disappointed when eighth home for apprentice rider Kozzi Asano, after racing third the outer then he was fifth wide across the top. He almost raced a tad too fresh having last raced five weeks prior but would win on the last day of this meeting and his connections have some bigger targets ahead including the G1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) on October 15. Mont Ventoux was running on for ninth and was actually the widest runner over the closing stages He had raced ninth and deep for the first half of the race then drifted but got his second wind the run home. Tenth home was Firoden that after being slow out was last at the 800m and was also noticed running on closer in. The rest came home beaten over fourteen lengths and as much as over thirty-five lengths at the line. The winner Lord Darci was far too good and is lightly raced for a five-year old too, so has some bigger races ahead of him plus it must be noted this was the first local winner of this race since McLaskry in 1999.
