This Listed mile for fillies and mares only under the WFA scale drew a reasonable line up and saw Flamingo finally get a deserved Blacktype win. The winners and where they turned for home in race order were third (four-wide and half a length from the leader), second (four-wide and a neck from the leader), third (five-wide and half a length from the leader), second (four-wide and half a length from the leader), third (three-wide and two lengths from the leader), third (four-wide and half a length from the leader) and fourth (four-wide and two lengths from the leader). The takeaway from the Tauherenikau track presented was the inside lanes were no go zones and it was manmade biased in another way too in that no winner was further away than two lengths from the leader turning for home. Backrunners and inside lane scouters tellingly could not win today no matter what the race speed was up front. Flamingo was having her sixth try at Blacktype today and had just two G3 thirds to show but the now 5yo mare has that breeding and broodmare relevant win that increases her worth significantly. She raced fifth mostly poised and came up four-wide (the winning lanes all day were four and five wide off turning for home or deeper) and she strode to the lead at the 250m and never looked in danger. The winning margin at the line was three-quarters of a length in 1:35.14, which represented a decent enough gallop on this track, to record her sixth win from twenty-one starts. Glory Days ran home strongly from second or third last on settling down the outer and was freshened up with the 6yo having last raced and failed at G3 almost seven weeks ago. She is more a middle distance mare and was a Listed winner at 2040m on December 1 against all comers carrying 55kg. Podravina ran home strongly to snare the Listed third for her resume and the 4yo mare was having her second ever go at Blacktype. Contessa Vanessa was asked to do a bit early in the running to be second and then settled fourth the outer only to be moved wide across the top and used up for a second time. She was second turning in and third still at the 100m before being fourth at the 25m but fought well all things factored in. Tinkalicious race third or fourth the inner and fought on well. Ladies First fresh up since a useful fifth at G3 over 2500m at Flemington on November 3 ran on well too late from last on settling and is a logical improver next time seen out. All In Vogue was a brave seventh after being trapped wide the whole way eighth then sixth and working overtime. Miss Doherty was just fair while the leader Petite En Jeu once headed at the 250m was fourth still at the 100m then got swamped late. Lubaya was only fair after settling well back the inner. The rest got beaten almost six and a half lengths and up to twenty lengths and were outclassed on the day though the distant last finisher Sleek Secret was too bad to be true. Flamingo was in foal and this is a natural power and performance edge that female gallopers are now using as a devastating dance card filler in their final campaigns or days of racing. There will be lots of winners to come out of this for the rest of the season locally and it was a legitimate Listed line up event. The runner up Glory Days is being aimed at the G21 Auckland Cup (3200m) while the sixth finisher Ladies First (which won the Auckland Cup last year) is being aimed at the G21 Sydney Cup (3200m) at Randwick on April 13.
