This G3 1600m for fillies and mares only was run and won in an ordinary time overall and the closing sectionals showed that the opening quarter was where the throttle was left open the widest. Miss Wilson, an Australian bred, won with authority and the three-quarters of a lengths victory does not do her justice as she has these well covered. The time of 1:37.16 is poor for this level but Miss Wilson after racing second the outer showed a good turn of foot to take the lead with 300m to go then surged clear. It was her fifth win in sixteen starts and her first piece of blacktype earned. Since coming back from Australia where she won a maiden but then struggled overall the now 4yo mare has found New Zealand depth incredibly easy and has won four races in a row. Stylish Attack ran on soundly for second after sitting midfield the outer while the favourite Charmont had every chance from a handy spot the outer. Our Abbadean was a sound fourth while Let Her Rip ran on okay but too late after getting back and she needs a stronger pace up front clearly. The only other run that caught the eye was China Star, which was slow and settled down last before running on well late. She is usually a pace influence. Several in the race can be forgiven with such a sedate time as getting too far back meant they could not mathematically be in the dividend bearing finish. Aotearower was dreadful in finishing last and clearly something is not right as she is many lengths better than what she showed. This was not that strong a field considering fillies and mares events more often than not have depth in New Zealand plus the supposed superior level ran at G2 at Ellerslie three days prior. There is a lone G1 each season for fillies and mares in New Zealand so that mile at Te Aroha will answer many questions, as it often does but that is on the proviso that track provides a decent and safe surface. The last meeting held there was abandoned after just two races so some work will need to be done to restore bettor, trainer and rider confidence. Miss Wilson is finding it so easy now back in New Zealand you cannot doubt she may be able to make the step up to G1 against her own sex. In a stronger run race overall the placings and first four may have altered slightly but hard to believe the winner would not have remained the same.
