Phill Cataldo Lightning Hcp (LR)

WT: 53kg Type: OPEN

This Listed 1200m Open Handicap had a weight spread from top to bottom of 7kg so no surprise then that the only G1 winner in the field Signify scored by a length. Signifiy won the G1 Telegraph here over Summer with just 55kg then went dreadful next time out at WFA before last start running on okay with 57kg back to standard Open Handicap for an apprentice. Today he had the senior rider on Chris Johnson and came from last to poke through then lift once drawn one-off to lead inside the final 50k and draw away. It was a dominant win and the 1:08.78 clocked was modest as the times that can be run down the chute and dogleg course of Trentham are mind-boggling. Signify when he won the Telegraph here clocked 1:07.71 to give some perspective and realism about the 800m-1200m times posted here. The 5yo gelding has now won nine of his thirty-three starts and Chris Johnson suits this sprinter and his racing style down to a tee. He had won on him as a 3yo against the Open sprinters with a similar epic piece of surge timing and it should be a maintained pairing from now on. Speech Craft ran on well for second after getting a soft trail but the winner has him covered at this stage. He finished a much better ninth than it can ever read in the Telegraph behind Signify when carrying 1kg more but today was in receipt of 2.5kg for a 3.5kg swing overall. Smashing ran a good third after sharing the pace on the inner then kicking well only to be swamped late. This was her second piece of blacktype earned and she now has two Listed third placings with both coming on this track. Thien Ly ran on well from being back wide (albeit with cover) for fourth while Volks Lightning fought on for fifth after being back on the inner (he was ahead of the winner on settling by a spot or two). Morse Code is usually a mad leader but was tardy and ended up back and wide with cover before reaching fourth briefly at the 200m then wilted. Snowdrop disappointed while La Fille En Jeu was wide the whole way with no cover and paid the price. Rocanto was poor and Tiebreaker outclassed. No depth in this field at all and like most of the blacktype events today the best credentialled and performed horse won here in Signify. He has these covered almost every time in a solidly enough run race and where manmade track bias against backrunners is not totally absurd.
