Desert Gold Stakes (G3)

Age: 3yo Sex: F Type: OPEN

This G3 3yo filly only mile saw the clear curt favourite Dijon Bleu revel in the off track with a distinct inner lanes bias the run home. Dijon Bleu was the only proven filly in the field being second at G1 last November over a mile albeit distant, as well as being a G3 winner and dual Listed winner this season so far with the successes all coming on wet ground. She settled sixth the inner and not far away to the home turn then her rider wisely stayed the inside turning for home and ominously got ever closer. Once angled one-off the filly surged through and led at the 200m then gapped them and revelled in the over-watered off track that saw parts of it worryingly chipping and flying in the air from the opening race. Dijon Blew won in the end by three lengths in 1:37.88. a very ordinary time indeed and showing just how off the Trentham track was presented today. This was the slowest mile time of the day and even a Ratings65 (one win runners basically) ran two lengths superior time. Dijon Bleu was winning her fifth race from ten starts and it was her fourth blacktype win. On dead, slow or heavy footing she has raced five times for four wins and a third (when resuming this season) so it is safe to assume she adores wet ground. Blanco Belle raced handy the outer and moved up to take the lead early the run home before the winner gave her a cold at the 200m. She is a known wet tracker so the footing today was a track watered enough to the point of it never ever improved all day despite good weather and that is what infuriates bettors with the raffle of watering too close to big G1 racedays that has become manmade bias. Milseain ran on well at just her second start and looks a filly with upside galore. Swiss Precision sat second the outer and fought on okay while Pinup Coup was quite brave after being wide and working the whole way. Insight had every chance from the trail and Miss Foxy Gal was reasonable down the outer in slower and less helpful lanes. Sandrine and Chill were fair and the rest got beaten by some big margins. The Lustre, third at G1 last November and just three-quarters of a length behind Dijon Bleu that day, has lost over fourteen lengths today and that is ridiculous. Rondinella came in here were a massive stable reputation and ran last beaten almost fifty-three lengths. She suffered cardiac arrhythmia and ran a clear second favourite in this. The winner was way superior and loved the over-watered footing presented on a G1 day in Summer, which sounds as strange as it reads and sounds. If she tried middle distance some of these will on breeding make her vulnerable but on wet ground she is the better swimmer. Milseain looks an Oaks player for sure as she is so lightly tried but has that frame strength and being out of a Zabeel dam it is middle distanced where she will shine the brightest. Pinup Coup was super at her fifth start and Miss Foxy Gal has more wins in store. Totally forgive most runners at this meeting today due to manmade track bias but in particular from this race The Lustre and Rondinella were not a true reflection of their ability whatsoever. Hasahalo won the G1 3yo filly mile last November by four length and absolutely gave Dijon Bleu windburn but has raced since and flopped but it came on a dreadful Ellerslie surface so she can redeem herself if able to find a normal racing surface in Summer. The 3yo filly pecking order has been muddled this season and the crop has been disappointing overall for a known strong point of New Zealand racing. Hopefully middle distance will see the bluebloods rise to the top and some semblance of normalcy will return in a season mired by too many natural wet tracks but also far too many manmade biased wet tracks.
