WT: 53kg Type: OPEN

This Listed 1200m Open Handicap saw an all the way win to Ferrando under 57kg in a time on a day of far from fast clockings cannot be accepted or believed. The chute at Trentham like Riccarton is legendary for the most bionic times imaginable and no time should ever be believed at these two venues from 800m to 1200m. Ferrando led and ran 1:07.73 and the 4yo had up until today never won an Open Handicap. He ran third here at G1 over 1200m three starts ago after leading under 55.5kg in a 1:08.30 run race yet today he carries 57kg and runs over three lengths faster. The time for some perspective is the unbeaten champion Black Caviar got her highest career rating over 1200m when winning the 2011 Newmarket on the straight six at Flemington (so no chute or dogleg) carrying 58kg and clocked the best time she ran of her entire career. Black Caviar ran 1:07.36, so Ferrando is within two and a half lengths of her is absurd and devoid of reality and to further highlight why chute times here are laughable the track record at Trentham is 1:06.51 set in 1999. The 2yo track record here is 1:07.24 set in 2004 so it ran faster than Black Caviar ever did in career did and this juvenile would have cleaned up Ferrando by three lengths. Yeah right. Ferrando scored by a neck and was winning his seventh race in seventeen starts and the 4yo is a win or nowhere type in general. Heroic Valour was snagged back to last from a wide gate and ran home strongly for second but has forgotten how to win and he last won a race in September of 2016. Son Of Maher ran on well for third and was a neck and a short head from winning after settling back then coming through to fourth at the 200m. Akoya trailed the leaders on the inner and reached second at the 100m before ending up fourth beaten less than a length. Volks Lightning did not use her ace gate properly and ended up not trailing her winning stablemate but buried back eighth or ninth the fence. She ran on okay for fifth and was only a length and a quarter from victory but did have her chance the closing stages if good enough. Passing Shot sat outside the winning leader and wilted to sixth then there was a gap to Ballybay, which was not too bad considering he was well out of his grade. Carnival sat four-wide fourth and the effort told the run home while Heni never got into the race and Shadow Fox, usually a slick beginner was tardy and never looked a hope. Enzo's Lad was wide third and stopped the run home unsurprisingly under 60kg and his G1 Telegraph Handicap win here is seeming more like a fluke by each outing since. He beat Ferrando home that day at the same weight and with 3kg more today is over eight lengths behind that runner at the line. Lucyinrio was back and wide and stopped badly to be a distant last and was found to have mucus in the respiratory tract post race. This was a Listed grade race or slightly better in fact for depth and apart from the run on pair that finished second or third the rest raced in or near the lead or on the inside that made up the bulk of the first eight home. Ferrando loves the Trentham track with five runs here for three wins (one at Listed level) a third (at G1) and a fourth (at G2).
