1000m DEAD

Wellesley Stakes (LR)

Age: 2yo Type: OPEN

The track presented at Trentham today was officially rated as a Dead5 but rain during the day downgraded it too a Dead6 for the last three races. This Listed juvenile over 1000m was Race Four and down the chute, which is bionic here no matter the footing, as they only join the course proper with 450m to go. The winners and where they turned for home in race order were second outer, third (trail inner), eighth (four lengths off leader in this 2400m (two-turn) race), third, fifth (two lengths off lead in a 2200m (two-turn) race, fourteenth (seven lengths off lead), tenth (five lengths off lead), fourth (inner) and fourth (own). Not one leader won all day and the inner lanes provided the most winners and placegetters on the day but the track did start cutting out the last three or four races as conditions changed. Exuberant won this on debut after racing fourth in the trail behind the leaders and then being angled off third and urgent into clear air turning for home. The colt then surged to lead at the 300m only to have a lone threat challenge him into a ding donger the final 100m before he got the bob in that matters most. He won officially by half a head in 57.48 and looks to have a bit to learn but knowing where the winning post is looks a good trait indeed. Last Sight won her debut and just missed remaining unbeaten after settling down fifth the inside and working out turning for home. The filly surged into second at the 300m then challenged at the 100m only to go down very narrowly. She has an Oaks look about her already being out of a stamina dam. Apellant ran on well from last on settling for third closer in and the stablemate of the top pick also looks like she will relish distance increases as the season develops. The Tailors Niece ran on well from eighth and unleashed nicely with the filly actually reaching third at the 200m before being fourth at the 100m and fighting on well. Beauty Diva weakened from outside the leader while Senzabeel was noticed running late from seventh on settling. Sai Fah, the stablemate of the first and third finishers, was trapped wide sixth and never ran on and the rest were weak the run home too. The first two home in this look to have decent upside but the third and fourth finishers have some scope too and even Senzabeel the sixth finisher looks to have something to offer this season as well.
