This G3 mile Open Handicap was won by the favourite Concert Hall that raced seventh or eighth the outer and she was then moved up wide near the home turn. The 6yo mare unleashed eight-wide and her surge saw second achieved at the 200m and then be a length from the leader at the 100m before taking over at the 15m and scoring by a neck in 1:38.86. The winners and where they came from on the home turn were led (one-off the inside and a length ahead), led (one-off the inside and two lengths ahead), third (on the fence and three lengths from the leader), tenth (six-off the fence and three lengths from the leader), second (one-off the inside and a neck from the leader), third (on the fence and two lengths from the leader), second (one-off the inside and two and a half lengths from the leader), eighth (eight off the inside and three lengths from the leader) and third (one-off the inside and a length from the leader). Seven of the nine winners raced one, two or three to the home turn so it was clear majority on pace track all day. Concert Hall was second up and winning her seven race from just twenty starts today and capturing her third G3 event. She has raced in ten Blacktype events including today and also has a second at G2 (beaten a neck when also second up) and has finished fourth three times as well and all of them came at G3. The mare has won at 1400m and up to 2300m so has a decent distance range. Second home was the two-win mare Vent that was having just her eighth start today and set the pace looking all over the winner until the closing stages. It was a super run by the 4yo mare and today was obviously her first try at Blacktype. Third home was Mauna Kea carrying 54.5kg, that has been out of form but found it today after racing handy the inner and getting third on the line. The 7yo gelding had not paid a dividend since winning this last year by a short head carrying 55.5kg. Fourth home was Guillada that raced fifth or sixth then strode up likely to run third until the last bob on line. Dolcetto fought on well the inner under clear topweight of 60kg (the next highest weight was 4.5kg less) after racing eighth the inner. Savy Yong Blonk, the second favourite, finished sixth after racing ninth wide early then getting over the outer midrace. She ran on well down the outer to be beaten just over three lengths but gave away too big a start turning for home. Skyphyta was an unheralded seventh beaten four and a half lengths after being trapped wide seventh then going up fourth wide midrace working before reaching third wide across the top to the home turn. The 6yo gelding is just a four-race winner and was at $47 a win. Ladies First plugged on after being crowded at the start and settling second the inner. The third favourite Loire settled back in the rear trio and plugged on wide out for ninth but never really got into the race. The rest got beaten over eight lengths and last home beaten over twenty-seven lengths was Rosewood that got detached by six lengths early and dropped out the run home. The 7yo mare seems to get easily disinterested in racing these days and this season is going good then bad races. She has run three good races (two fourths and late run for sixth) and three absolute shockers, so is trying to tell someone something. The footing was a Dead5 and the track raced clearly off all day due to morning and early afternoon rain. Some good efforts were seen in this race considering the way the track raced and Dolcetto, Savy Yong Blonk and Skyphyta all ran well but none of them paid a dividend. Perhaps the best run in the race was the runner up Vent, as she almost at her first ever Blacktype outing scored at G3.
