This Listed 2400m handicap had a tearaway lightweight leader that was ten lengths in front midrace and pouring it on so it become a real stamina test. The first three home were mares unsurprisingly in Sureasyouwereborn, My Chino and Eva Keeneva and the winning time of 2:33 Sureasyouwereborn is a 4yo so has scope with her stamina ability already obvious plus she can swim too so not many negatives for the mare. She raced handy albeit a long way from the clear leader and just kept coming the run home to win her fifth race from eighteen starts. Significantly she has been placed five times too and been in the first five another four times so is very consistent. My Chino looked the winner halfway up the Wingatui homestraight when piercing through but the winner outstayed the older mare. Eva Keeneva was big for third after being last the outer and miles away from the leader at the halfway mark. She too kept coming forward and was beaten less than a length. Mr Nobody showed he will win a lot more now trained in the South Island as he handled the class rise no worries. The clear leader that tried to run them ragged was Puddle Alley and he ended up fifth beaten just under five lengths and was paying nearly $80 for a win. He made the race and was the second outsider of the field being a one-win from thirty-eight starts 6yo gelding. Oor Willie kept grinding on the run home as he does while King Prawn passed a few stoppers over the final 400m. The rest were well beaten and will sleep well as the track conditions and race tempo found so many out and a long from home too, The positive is another 4yo won a staying race so has seasons of racing ahead and scope to improve further. The mares filling the top three spots is never a surprise in New Zealand racing as they dominate the landscape and have done so for many years with the advantages they now receive.
