Why hyped colt "for the future" can win Blue Diamond
By Connor Scanlon
The talented Guest House has been hailed as “a horse for the future” by RSN’s Trav Noonan off the back of his impressive debut.
There was plenty of hype surrounding the Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr-trained colt prior to his first career start at Cranbourne on Saturday, and he lived up to all expectations.
The two-year-old who was ridden by Jamie Melham circled into the race beautifully before hitting the lead with 200m to go.
After that, Guest House was no match for his two-year-old competition, blitzing away from the lot to win by 0.75 lengths.
Expert racing analyst Trav Noonan was thoroughly impressed with the young bay but couldn’t help but notice how much money was thrown onto the colt by punters.
“Guest House was relentlessly backed in the market, that's one thing I did notice about this race,” he said on RSN’s Correct Weight.
“He was $2.20 the morning of the race and he started at $1.85.
“He's a really progressive horse, like he did a bit wrong here in the race and he was still able to capitalise.”
Trav’s brother Nick also made a similar observation, being in disbelief at how much hype the racing media put on a horse which hadn’t even made his debut yet.
“Have you ever seen more hype about a horse who never had a start?” he asked.
“I read about four articles on him before he even had a race, so I think there was plenty of anticipation around him there.
“It could be rightly so, I think if you had a Blue Diamond market, he'd probably be the favourite right now.”
“He does look like a horse who's gonna be right at the top of things for a Blue Diamond,” Trav Noonan agreed.
Nick Noonan was at the Cranbourne track on Saturday and witnessed first-hand how outstanding the colt physically appeared but was more impressed by the maturity Price & Kent Jnr’s colt showed before and during the run.
“His size and strength, he doesn't really look like a two-year-old,” Nick explained.
“He had a bit on those horses yesterday, but I don't know if he faced the strongest field that we have here at the moment.
“But he really stood out there yesterday and I think just the way he handled himself as well.
“I thought the best part of his win was when he jumped away well and Jamie (Melham) thought, ‘Well, I'm just gonna take a sit, give him a nice run, one-out-one-back.’
“Then the speed sort of came out of the race, and he got right onto the heels of Resolutely. That could've been game over for a two-year-old after that.
“To just pick himself back up after that like nothing happened (was amazing).
“It was the win he had to have if he's gonna be competitive in a Blue Diamond Prelude, Preview, wherever they go next.”
Furthermore, Nick believes the Cranbourne track didn’t suit Guest House, believing that if the bay was to race on a bigger track with a longer straight, then he would absolutely demolish his competition.
“I don't think we necessarily saw the absolute best of him around Cranbourne,” Nick revealed.
“I think a bigger track, probably a longer straight, we might have seen him really pull away from his rivals.
“His work through the line was suggestive that he’s just gonna get better over further distances.
“You look sort of 100m, 200m past the post, he's pretty much in splendid isolation past that line.
“So, I think bigger track next start, that would definitely be more favourable for him.”
The two-year-old Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) will be run on February 21, 2026, and Guest House is a colt who you must respect heading into that race.
