Tasracing's Sunday best bets at Hobart (25/01)
By Matt Reid
The second feature meeting of the weekend is in Hobart on Sunday afternoon for the running of the Listed Kevin Sharkie Elwick Stakes program.
The support card also includes the $75,000 Thousand Guineas over a mile.
The rail moves out to +10m after being at +4m for the meeting a week ago.
Best bet
Race 7 – 1. Daytona Diva
I’m mildly surprised to see black odds about Daytona Diva, who has had this race circled on the calendar for a while. She was beaten at very short odds last start, but that winner has now won four races, and the quinella spaced the rest by about five lengths. From the wide draw, I expect Jabez Johnstone to roll forward in a race lacking pace and extend Daytona Diva’s record in Hobart to a perfect 4/4.
Next best
Race 3 – 11. Geegees Mercedes
Geegees Mercedes raced here last Sunday, never better than three wide without cover on a day where all the winners exclusively came from the inside couple of lanes. She has a low draw here, and the speed map has softened up considerably with a few scratches. Codi Jordan comes off a riding double on Friday night and can extend her good form to Hobart.
Best value
Race 2 – 4. Eastcoast Miss
Despite the small field for this 1100m contest, there looks to be mad speed with Fluffy’s Girl, Alpine Thunder and Quicken Up all preferential leaders. That charge up front may make the leaders susceptible late, which would suit Eastcoast Miss if she’s close enough to strike. She was a good run at the track first-up and franked that with a subsequent victory in Launceston.
