Is Pride Of Jenni past her prime?

Pride Of Jenni resumed as the $2.30 favourite with Sportsbet in the Group 1 All-Star Mile on Saturday yet was overrun at the 200m mark, causing her to finish third.

The eight-year-old mare, who has won four Group 1 races across her career, is nearing retirement once again.

Back in November of 2024, the Tony Ottobre-owned mare was retired after competing in the Champions Mile at Flemington. But that retirement was short-lived, as she returned in the Peter Young Stakes a few months later.

Since her second coming, the daughter of Pride Of Dubai has now competed in nine races, even winning the Group 1 Empire Rose last spring.

However, questions are now being asked if she is still the same horse that can win at Group 1 level.

Prominent racing owner John O’Neill is of the belief that the Ciaron Maher-trained bay is no longer as good as she once was.

“She's been a wonderful mare - we've all been on the journey with her, we love her, Tony (Ottobre’s) done an incredible job with her,” O’Neill said on SENTrack & RSN’s Giddy Up.

“She's come back (from retirement), but I don't think she's as good as what she was.

“She might not need to be, but she's not as good as what she was.”

When reflecting on her recent run in the All-Star Mile, the racehorse owner was confident prior to the race that Pride Of Jenni would win.

The reason why? Because the Flemington track was favouring leaders on the day.

Due to this, trainer Wayne Hawkes pointed out to O’Neill that the track would have helped Pride Of Jenni due to her aggressive, leading race style – meaning her third-placed finish flattered her.

O’Neill: “The way that track was playing Saturday, everybody thought it was a sit and steer (for Pride Of Jenni).”

Hawkes: “So if you say it was a leaders track on Saturday, did that flatter her?

O’Neill: “No doubt.

Hawkes: “There you go.”

However, the pair quickly changed their tone, stating that she still looked amazing in the run, with the both of them exclaiming that they would love to own and train her.

Hawkes: “She looks good, she doesn't look bad.”

O’Neill: “No, she doesn't, she looks fantastic.

“It's easy to be picky, isn't it?

Hawkes: “We always are.

“We'd all want to own her and trainer her.

O’Neill: “Of course, 100%.”

Regarding the mare’s next run, Giddy Up host Gareth Hall confirmed that Tony Ottobre is eager to send the eight-year-old to the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) on March 28.

Pride Of Jenni is currently $8 with Sportsbet to win that $2 million race at Flemington.
