Million a year: Young Saint’s eye-watering contract revealed

By SEN

St Kilda’s big spending last season wasn’t just on recruits Tom De Koning, Sam Flanders, Jack Silvagni and Liam Ryan.

The most they spent on one player was on one they already had, with Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera inking a deal worth a reported $2 million a year. But it wasn’t only 'Nas' that was well looked after by the club, according to SEN’s Tom Morris.

Morris understands that fellow youngster Mattaes Phillipou is also set to earn big bucks in the red, white and black, with his new deal set to earn him around $1 million a year.

Phillipou inked his new deal last August, and as he was already contracted until 2026, the contract with improved money was tabled for 2027 and 2028.

Morris questioned whether Phillipou had done enough to earn such a deal, even if St Kilda were wary of another young player performing so well in a contract year like Wanganeen-Milera, who they ultimately had to pay full freight for.

“I’ll leave you with this, Matteas Philippou re-signed halfway through last year, a two-year extension for 2027 and 2028,” Morris said on SEN Breakfast.

“My understanding is that extension is around a million dollars a year.

“Is he playing like a million-dollar player yet?”

Phillipou suffered a corked thigh in Sunday’s loss to the Demons.

The 21-year-old has played 46 games since being drafted with pick 10 in the 2022 draft.

He averages 12.6 disposals, 0.5 goals and 2.6 marks a game across his career so far.
