Why Zorko doesn't mind being off Broadway for Gather Round
By Nicholas Quinlan
While they won't be on the main stage of Gather Round, Brisbane's Dayne Zorko is looking forward to playing in the Barossa Valley.
Since the beginning of Gather Round in 2023, the Lions have been the most successful side in the competition, having made the last three grand finals, resulting in two premierships.
Despite their success, they have not featured at Adelaide Oval during Gather Round, having played at Norwood Oval and Summit Sport and Recreation Park, with an average attendance of 8,536.
2026 proves to be no different as they’ll play North Melbourne at Barossa Park, marking their third venue in four years during the football festival.
However, the five-time Merrett-Murray Medallist is looking forward to playing at Barossa Park, which holds 12,000 people.
“It’s going to be a great game for us,” Zorko explained on SENQ Breakfast.
“I don’t know if they’ve played at the Barossa, we obviously haven’t before, so it’s going to be a new surrounding for us.
“But there’s something about going back to these local grounds and playing in front of 10,000 again and the change rooms and all that sort of stuff, I actually quite enjoy.
“So, I’m actually really looking forward to getting down there and having a good look at it and having a good game.”
And according to Zorko, it’s a sentiment shared with his teammates who are looking forward to the club’s first match at the venue.
“Honestly, if you ask our playing group, we don’t really mind,” he added.
“Sure, it’s off Broadway, but it’s a great opportunity to play in front of a new stadium.
“It’s a new opportunity to play at a different ground. From all reports, the ground is in immaculate condition as expected.
“I sort of don’t mind it, and it’s an early game too, so we’re getting used to these 12 o’clock starts.”
The Lions will be hoping to continue their undefeated run at Gather Round against the Kangaroos on Saturday.
SEN will have live coverage of the match from 12pm AEST following the conclusion of Crunch Time.
That can be heard across SEN’s radio network and on the SEN app.
