Why Arthars is looking forward to filling Walsh void
By Nicholas Quinlan
While Reece Walsh is out of the side with a fractured cheekbone, Brisbane's Jesse Arthars is looking forward to the opportunity of playing as fullback in his 100th NRL game.
Despite getting the job done against Gold Coast on Saturday, the Broncos left the match worse for wear with injuries to Ben Hunt, Adam Reynolds and Reece Walsh throughout the match.
While Reynolds will be back in the starting line-up, Michael Maguire has still been forced to make several changes, resulting in Arthars being shuffled in the backs.
Despite being named in Queensland’s State of Origin squad for Game I last year, the 27-year-old started the year in the QLD Cup, having played his first NRL game last week on the wings.
But with Walsh being ruled him out for at least this month, the versatile back has been put into the No. 1 jersey.
The opportunity to start as fullback is certainly not lost on Arthars, who is adamant about making the most of it while last year’s Clive Churchill Medallist is sidelined.
“Obviously, I'm not Reece Walsh,” Arthars told SENQ Breakfast.
“I understand what he brings to the team; it's very important.
“So, I just want to make sure that I can bring my strengths and just do the job for the boys.
“I want to make sure I'm sort of filling that void while Reece is gone.
“Like I said, it just gives myself another opportunity to be back in the team and get some more games under my belt.
“I love playing for the Bronx and playing for the boys, so I'm keen to get out there.”
The Broncos play their Round 6 clash against the Cowboys on Friday night at Suncorp Stadium.
SEN will have live coverage of the match on Broncos Radio on SENQ and on the SEN app following the conclusion of the Dragons vs Sea Eagles match.
Kick-off takes place at 8pm AEST.
