Storm CEO keen to strike on Gather Round opportunity

With the Melbourne Storm having no AFL to compete with this weekend, CEO Justin Rodski has spoken on the club's desire to make this fixture its most attended in future years.

While all 18 AFL teams have been heading to South Australia for a week in April for the last four years, the NRL has ensured the Storm will have a home game at AAMI Park on this weekend.

And already, it’s proving to have an effect at the turnstile.

Last year’s match against the Warriors brought in 26,427 spectators, which is currently the team’s third-highest attendance for a home and away match at their home ground.

According to the Storm chief, this year is on a similar trajectory.

“Yeah, we are very happy with that,” Rodski explained on SEN’s Whateley.

“We work closely with the NRL to make sure that this game (is) fixtured (during this time).

“Strategically for us, it's really important in this market coming up against the Warriors, who are our highest drawing opponent when it comes to fixtures and opponents on a Saturday night with no AFL in town.

“We're now closing in on a sellout.

“So, it's going to be a huge crowd and a great night and certainly reflective of the weekend. We're really excited for what's to come.”

With the scheduling of the match proving to be a successful one, the Storm are already turning their attention to how they can make the match bigger.

Last year, Melbourne floated the possibility of playing their first match at the MCG since 2000 during the Gather Round weekend.

Having spoken to key stakeholders, it may take a little while before they play at Australia’s biggest stadium.

But there is interest in a home game being played at a bigger venue than AAMI Park, like Marvel Stadium.

“Not a lot in the short-term,” he said.

“We've spoken with Visit Victoria, spoken to the MCC (Melbourne Cricket Club), spoken to the NRL, and there's an appetite to explore something in the future.

“Whether or not we look to go to Marvel as a first step and sell out Marvel against the Warriors or look at another option around ANZAC Day or something like that. They're the sort of things that we're starting to discuss.

“I think that there's definitely potential in the future, but it won't be in the next couple of years.”

Melbourne will look to end their three-match losing streak when they take on the New Zealand Warriors this Saturday at AAMI Park.

Kick-off is at 7:35pm AEST.
