Signings watch: The halfback the Dragons need to chase

By Nicholas Quinlan

With the Dragons staring down the barrel of a 0-8 start, Chad Townsend has named the halfback that the club should go and sign.

One of the club's big positional issues during Shane Flanagan's time with the Red V has been in the halves.

After Ben Hunt's departure in 2024, the club struggled to find a five-eight/halfback hcombination that worked.

Following Flanagan's sacking on Monday, interim coach Dean Young has decided to bench half Kyle Flanagan in favour of 20-year-old Kade Reed for their ANZAC Day clash against the Roosters.

But with their wider issues in the halves, the 2016 Premiership player on SEN 1170 and SENQ's The Run Home encouraged St George Illawarra to sign in-form half Tanah Boyd from the Warriors to help build depth in the side.

Townsend: "Tanah Boyd, he's off contract at the end of the year."

"I don't think they can keep him, his value's now gone up."

Bryan Fletcher: "But Kade Reed is a genuine 7."

"What are you doing with Daniel Atkinson?"

Townsend: "Yeah, Daniel Atkinson (is a) 6 every day of the week."

Fletcher: "What if Kade Reed in the next 15 weeks goes berserk?"

“Are you going with him?"

Townsend: "I like Kade Reed."

I'm a big fan of getting him into the game this week.

But ultimately, I think bringing in someone like Tanah Boyd, where you've got someone who's a bit older, a bit more mature and can also compete and help someone like Kade Reed.

Tanah Boyd may come in next year, and he may start the season.

But you've got Kade Reed there who's still developing his game and puts pressure on someone like Tanah.

Look at the West Tigers, right? They lose Jarome Luai (and) bring in Jock Madden who's done his apprenticeship, he's been there as a back-up. Now he's delivered.

Tanah Boyd has done (a) similar thing, where he went to the Warriors, played under Chanel Harris-Tevita and Luke Metcalf (and did) his apprenticeship last year in the New South Wales Cup, now he's thriving.

Boyd and the Warriors will feature on ANZAC Day against the Dolphins in Wellington from 6:05pm AEST.

The Dragons take on the Roosters at Allianz Stadium from 4:05pm at Allianz Stadium.

SEN League will have live coverage of the clash from Allianz Stadium at 3pm across our radio network and on the SEN app.
